Julie Davis, Ed.D.
Julie Davis, Ed.D., has had a rich and varied career in education. Julie earned her bachelor’s degree at North Park University in Chicago and began teaching in the Chicago area. After relocating to Columbus, Ohio, she served as a teacher and then a Teacher Leader in the Gahanna-Jefferson (OH) School district. Returning to school, she earned a Master’s degree in Educational Theory and Practice at the Ohio State University and then went on to gain administrative certification from Ashland University. Davis followed that up with postgraduate work at Nova Southeastern University, where she was awarded a Doctor of Education in Organizational Leadership.
Although she has been both a teacher and a principal, for much of Dr. Davis’s career her role has been that of educating educators. Most recently, Julie has served as development director for the Central Ohio Regional School Improvement Team, which provides support and professional development to educators in 46 school districts in the Columbus, Ohio area. A key function of the group is working with schools or districts that did not meet Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) standards and deploying state initiatives for the Ohio Department of Education. Davis also served on the writing team for the Ohio’s Educator Standards for Principals.
Currently, Julie is the Director of Standards Aligned Instructional Leadership (SAIL), an Ohio-based professional development program for school principals and teacher leaders. SAIL was launched in 2003 with the goal of providing professional development to both entry-year and experienced school principals in Ohio. Having achieved notable success, the organization is expanding its horizons and is now available beyond Ohio’s borders. Davis has also inaugurated SAIL for Teacher Leadership, which extends SAIL services beyond school administrative ranks by tailoring a program for classroom teachers. SAIL Online, a recent innovation, will further extend the organization’s reach. Learn more about the professional development opportunities SAIL affords by visiting www.sailforeducation.org.
Workshops
Downey Classroom Walk-Through- Level I
Julie is a certified, national trainer for the Downey Classroom Walk-Through which provides administrators and mentor coaches strategies for using a five step structured walk-through approach focusing on the classroom observation and providing a framework for reflective questioning. During this two day session, participants will learn the fundamental concepts of the Walk-Through process, and apply these strategies immediately through actual classroom visits. Observational components include determining Ohio Academic Content Standards and grade level indicators being taught and the use of effective classroom practices that support reaching the indicator. The ultimate goal of the training is to influence reflective, self-directed, self analytical, interdependent educators who examine their own practice. This workshop is designed for educators who are willing to continue to improve and who are committed to addressing the district curriculum and work for ever higher student achievement. The training is limited to twenty-five participants so that specific concerns can be thoroughly discussed and resolved.
Downey Classroom Walk-Through - Level II
The Downey Classroom Walk-Through Level II Workshop will give participants the opportunity to further practice the Walk-Through techniques taught in Walk-Through Level I. This two-day seminar will be spent visiting numerous classrooms and refining participants' understanding and use of the reflective questioning techniques. Included in the workshop are extended opportunities for practicing the reflective dialogue protocols with specific attention to the Ohio Academic Content Standards. Participants must have attended a Classroom Level I Walk-Through session and completed over 100 hours of Walk-Through practice before attending. Come prepared to share your own successes and questions regarding the Walk-Through process.
